Reflections on the 2007 World Show |
|
|
First I would like to thank ALL our exhibitors. Without them we
would not have enjoyed a successful show! As is the norm for
Columbia this time of year, the heat added a significant degree of
difficulty for them. And, I would like to thank those on the show
committee for their hard work and especially to Jason Crist for his
help on the Committee and his work taking care of the Pay Back
portion of the World Show Budget.
Next, I would like to thank the show staff as they certainly deserve
recognition. The ladies in the office, Deb Crist and Cindi Pierson,
very professionally made all of the many small problems and issues
go away before most of us knew we had any. Our Announcer, Ron Crist,
again did an outstanding and very professional job, making it look
easy. Our gate man Chester Hopper & ring steward Jennifer Daniels
did much more than the usual job description. Thanks to Judy Davis &
Nancy Schneider or making sure the exhibitors leaving the ring
received the right ribbons and paybacks, usually a pretty
straightforward task, but with two shows running concurrently, a
perfect opportunity to allow confusion to reign! I want to thank Sue
King, who as usual saved the most arduous show tasks for herself,
out in the heat of the day, running the trail class and making that
run as smoothly as humanly possible and making herself sick in the
process. How can you thank dedication like that? I also want to
thank everyone who simply jumped in and helped whenever the need
arose.
In addition, a special thanks to Jim Joling and Junior Upton for
setting up the trail class for Paid Trail Practice which raised $146
for the Youth Scholarship Fund. And, then for monitoring,
re-measuring and resetting the trail obstacles for all the Trail
Classes on Saturday morning, a very hot, repetitive, but important
job.
The Silent Auction was again a success. Many thanks to the members
who donated items for the auction, and to Nancy & Judy for working
it.
Thank you Debbie Brewer for your exceptional computer skills (and
some long hours) tabulating and posting show points. Sue Cole, for
your much needed advice & council. Our vendors who stuck with us to
the end and, and a very special thanks to our photographer, Dawn
Baxtrom & her able assistant, who not only provided very
professional photographic service for the show, but excelled at
cross country running while helping me chase down my wayward donkey
"Brat" who lived up to his name and took off for parts unknown
Sunday evening before we could get him loaded.
To Doc Colbert who very graciously allowed us to move the World Show
to his venue making his job as All Star Show Manager much more
difficult than it needed to be. The All Star boasted 361 entries
with 104 animals entered.
Our members Roger & Julee Smith of Rocking S, Jim & Sue King Joling
of Brayer Hill Farm, Golian's Saddles and Tack, Florence Riley and
Joe and Pam Palmonari, who donated buckles for the show, making sure
that our Youth and others in all divisions were appropriately
rewarded for their dedication, hard work & enthusiasm. And to Stacy
Golian for making the buckles magically appear at the show.
And finally, to my wife, Nancy, who very graciously allowed me to
spend many hours on the phone & computer, providing advise, support
& criticism when needed.
The 2007 World Show was bigger this year than last. We had 441
entries with 91 mules & donkeys attending. I think much of this can
be attributed to our youth members. We also made some mistakes that
I certainly apologize for. We learned some valuable lessons and will
make sure the mistakes are not made again at future shows.
This was my final year as Chairman of the World Show Committee and
while I enjoyed and certainly learned from the experience, I am glad
we had others willing and able to take on the task. I encourage our
membership to be active, not only in showing, but in the running of
our organization as well. Volunteer for one of the committees of
interest or accept nomination for office. We need YOU!
Thanks again, & looking forward to seeing you all at next year’s
show.
