My name is Melanie Wilson but everyone
just calls me “Mel”. I was raised around quarter horses all my life
and shared the love for them with my Dad. I was 18 months old the
first time Dad put me on a horse and to this day my Mom still tells
the story of how scared she was watching such a small baby be put on
such a large horse, of course Dad was in the saddle with me but to her
that seemed little relief. I was exposed to my first mule when
my husband Scotty purchased a john mule that stood 16.1
hands...wow...this was unfamiliar territory for me but I soon learned
that he was nothing more than a gentle giant. The next mule came in
the form of a gruella molly named Wonder who I claimed for myself and
needless to say, I have not ridden a horse since. When it comes time
to ride, I’ll take my mule! It wasn’t until I saw the first mule baby
that I was truly hooked. Knowing I had to have one of my own, I
purchased a brood mare that was due to foal and that was all it took.
This year I have seven mule babies on the way and the excitement is
already overwhelming. Mules have became my life but the babies are my
passion. I truly look at them as a blessing from God. Today, my
husband Scotty and I live on a ranch in Central Missouri where we
enjoy everything from the mules, horses, dogs, pet peacock and
wildlife that occasionally shares a bucket of grain with the other
livestock.
I am very honored to be a NASMA Zone 5 Board of Director and I
promise to fulfill this important position to the best of my ability.
We are all part of a wonderful organization and being chairman of the
membership committee is just an added bonus to me. Please know, if
there is anything you need or if you simply would like to call me up
to chat, that’s what I’m here for.
Sincerely,
Mel Wilson
