Fly Protection for Your Mule

Fly Sheets (this really works)

Fly spray recipes:

In a gallon jug half full of water add:

  • 2.5 oz of 10% permethrin, (feed stores or Tractor Supply)
  • 6 oz of propylene glycol, Jeffers or any farm supply catalog. or you could probably use 3 oz of bath oil, like Skin So Soft or the Wal-mart equivalent (the oil may attract more dust than the PG).
  • 2 oz of Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil (or citronella oil) We get it from  http://addy.com/brinkley/eolink.html or you can get it from any soap making supplier selling essential oils.

Add the ingredients to the water. Then add more water to bring it to a gallon total volume.

This fly spray has a cumulative, residual effect and gets even better after a few days use (use liberally). The permethrin bonds to the hair and even works after a rain. It's also much better for them than the pyrethrin based sprays & much more effective & longer lasting. We get a full 24 hours, fly &mosquito free from 1 spraying. Last year, the mules also had ticks daily (using Repel-X) and this year, not a single one using this spray. Flies in the barn area have also been very rare this year since we've been using this.
