NASMA President’s Pen

Another year to be thankful for the simple pleasures, and the
opportunity to live in a country where freedom is the greatest
possession we hold true. Happy New Year!
Something I have always been fascinated with, that really trips my
trigger, is the Show Ring – the preparation, the adrenaline, the
conduct, the outcome, the reaction. The respectful way of handling
one’s animal and also oneself – manners if you will.
The show ring can certainly be emotional for adults, whereas the
grace kids exhibit is impressive beyond their years. In fact, youth
embody the true meaning of sportsmanship at its’ finest. How
children cope under pressure is learned – they are always observing.
Our animals, too, mirror our behavior. Boy! That makes you want to
clean up your act. There is an appreciation for those that display
exemplary sportsmanship both in and out of the ring, and share their
moments with everyone involved – the show manager, the gate person,
the show secretary, fellow exhibitors and spectators, as they have
all had a part in our performance. A “High Tide Lifts All Boats”,
“The Golden Rule”, “The Cowboy Code”. . . Nuff said.
The mule and donkey industry is as diverse as the people in it. Some
people are born into it, others acquire it through time and
practice. For the fortunate few, long-ears are their livelihood. For
many more, being involved with these animals is created and lived
apart from their everyday lives. It may be a release from career
pressures, for the thrill of competition, to carry on a family
tradition, for the camaraderie and friendships they experience along
the way. To represent our animals without a personal agenda, to
consider the best interest of all our members, being the change we
wish to see; the true mission of NASMA.
One thing is certain; we share a common and unique thread that binds
us. Tenacity, stamina and brawn – that’s what mule and donkey people
possess (add a little craziness in there); the makings of an
enjoyable organization.
A terrific 2012 to all of you,
