It is appropriate on anniversaries to look back before stepping forward, surveying the road traveled and accomplishments along the way. Seventeen years ago, a forward-thinking group of long ear enthusiasts from across the country convened at The Great Celebration Mule and Donkey Show in Shelbyville, Tennessee to hold the first Charter meeting of the Board of Directors for the newly formed North American Saddle Mule Association. That vision has gone far in preserving the breeds' integrity and history, and the success of this organization is but a reflection of the ever-increasing dedication and enthusiasm the volunteers display.

NASMA membership, governed by an elected board of 24 Directors, entitles members to vote in general elections, serve on various committees and offices, and promote their mules and donkeys through shows, contests, awards and trail riding programs. The impressive NASMA website, www.nasma.us is worth your time perusing!

Welcome to all of the newly elected Board of Directors, Officers and Committee members - your time and energy is appreciated.

Shelbyville, Tennessee once again played host to the 20th annual Great Celebration Mule and Donkey Show July 7-9. This included the NASMA National Championship Show, ACOSA National Championship Show, AGMA World Championship Show and the NMDA Sanctioned Show. One had to be awe-struck by observing the personalities, sportsmanship and abilities of the Youth at this show. You guys rock!

To Margaret Eakin, Dale Barnett and crew at the Celebration, and the NASMA National Show Committee – you are fantastic.

Tom and Deby Cochran have decided to step down from their duties with the National Show Committee this year, leaving big shoes to fill. Thank you, Cochran’s, for always giving something precious – your time, talent, integrity.

Congratulations to Kathy Herrin from Canon City, Colorado – Show Announcer Extraordinaire, the 2011 recipient of the NASMA Lifetime Achievement Award. Thank you for making a difference.

Best to all of you,

Terri Wagner
